Background of the study
Multimodal translation involves the integration of various semiotic modes—such as text, images, audio, and video—to facilitate understanding and enhance educational outcomes. In Calabar, Efik language educational materials are increasingly incorporating multimodal elements to engage learners and preserve cultural heritage. This approach recognizes that traditional text-based translation alone may not fully capture the richness of cultural expressions embedded in educational content (Udo, 2023). The application of multimodal translation in Efik materials involves adapting visual and auditory cues to reflect the cultural context and pedagogical needs of learners. Educators and content developers are challenged to ensure that all modes work synergistically to deliver coherent and contextually accurate information (Anyanwu, 2024). Digital technologies have further expanded the scope of multimodal translation, offering innovative tools that enable interactive learning experiences. Despite these advancements, issues such as inconsistent quality, technological disparities, and a lack of standardized guidelines persist, affecting the overall efficacy of educational materials. This study appraises current multimodal translation practices in Efik language educational materials, assessing their impact on learning outcomes and cultural preservation (Obong, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Although multimodal translation offers significant potential for enhancing Efik language educational materials, several challenges hinder its effective implementation in Calabar. Inconsistencies in the integration of text, images, and audio often result in fragmented content that confuses learners (Udo, 2023). Furthermore, a lack of standardization in multimodal translation practices has led to variations in the quality and cultural relevance of educational materials (Anyanwu, 2024). Technical limitations and insufficient training for educators further exacerbate these issues, reducing the overall effectiveness of the materials. This study aims to identify the key obstacles in multimodal translation within Efik educational resources and propose strategies to optimize the integration of diverse media elements (Obong, 2023).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate current multimodal translation practices in Efik educational materials.
  2. To identify challenges affecting the quality and consistency of these materials.
  3. To propose guidelines for effective multimodal translation.

Research questions:

  1. What multimodal translation techniques are used in Efik educational materials?
  2. What challenges impact the integration of different modes of communication?
  3. How can multimodal translation be standardized to improve educational outcomes?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines the role of multimodal translation in enhancing Efik language educational materials. The findings will provide valuable insights for educators, content developers, and policymakers, enabling them to create more engaging and culturally relevant resources. Improved multimodal practices will support better learning outcomes and contribute to the preservation of Efik cultural heritage (Udo, 2023; Anyanwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating multimodal translation practices in Efik language educational materials in Calabar. It does not extend to other subjects or regions.

Definitions of terms:

  • Multimodal translation: The process of translating content using multiple modes of communication.
  • Educational materials: Resources designed to support teaching and learning.
  • Efik language: The indigenous language of the Efik people in Calabar.
